| "Afghan students learn the centuries-old skills that carved out the giant buddhas blown up by extremists. ... The cave-hall was part of a complex built around two giant buddhas that loomed serenely over Bamiyan for about 15 centuries until the Taliban government condemned them as un-Islamic in early 2001 and blew them up. "I was interested in this course because I want to restore our culture," said Ismael Wahidi, a 22-year-old student of archeology at Bamiyan University, who set aside more conventional studies for a week to learn how to turn a lump of stone into a sculpture. | A massive block of limestone in France contains what scientists believe are the earliest known engravings of wall art dating back some 37,000 years, according to a study published Monday. The 1.5 metric ton ceiling piece was first discovered in 2007 at Abri Castanet, a well known archeological site in southwestern France which holds some of the earliest forms of artwork, beads and pierced shells. According to New York University anthropology professor Randall White, lead author of the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the art was likely meant to adorn the interior of a shelter... |

One of the most well-known artists in history, Salvador Dali, was born on 11 May 1904 in the town of Figueres in the Catalonian province of Spain. Equally celebrated and reviled, this mustachioed Spaniard has become an icon of the art historical canon remembered both for his bizarre art and bizarre personality. At 18 the young Salvador moved to Madrid to study at the Academia de San Fernando. Through his residence he became friends with Pepin Bello, Luis Bunuel, and Federico Garcia Lorca who were all to become well-known in the Spanish art and literature. Dali was soon expelled from...

S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands (Reuters) - When Christianity fades, it doesn't just leave empty pews behind. With each church that shuts, the statues, crucifixes, chalices, paintings or vestments that were part of regular Sunday services suddenly have no liturgical home.In the Netherlands, where faith has faded more dramatically than in many other parts of Europe, two churches close down on average every week. The sacred art left over is piling up in cellars and storerooms around the country. Some congregations elsewhere have the opposite problem. New Catholic and Protestant churches are springing up in Latin America, Africa and Asia, and pastors in eastern...

When Frank Faryab bought an obscure oil painting for thousands of pounds in a private sale, it was just the start of his outlay on the work. For the art and antiques dealer has since spent more than £2million and much of the past five years trying to convince others it was by JMW Turner, one of Britain's greatest painters. The perseverance appears to have paid off - because three leading authorities on the artist work now agree it is a lost Turner masterpiece which could be worth about £4million. Experts at the auction house Sotheby's will examine the painting...

From: Man Alive! A survival manual for the human mind. by Greg Swann Chapter 8. The integrity of art. The universe is internally self-consistent. This is what we mean when we say it Âmakes sense â the laws of nature are comprehensible to us because they are all consistent with each other, all superficially differentiated manifestations of the law of identity. This is actually a matter of controversy right now in theoretical physics, where the self-consistency of the universe and humanityÂs seemingly uncanny adaptation to it are held to be evidence â in the mother of all We-Now-Know-We-Know-Nothing theories â...

ELMWOOD PARK Just as the killing of Trayvon Martin is seen in differing ways, so is a mural created as a tribute to the Florida teen. Artists call the mural in Elmwood Park an expression of solidarity for the young shooting victim, while some neighbors oppose the display, saying it promotes gang activity. Now town officials say the mural at Messina deli on East 54th street must come down. "We got multiple complaints from residents in the area," said mayor Richard Mola. "What they told me is they just dont like whats up there." Mola, who said he has...

(CBS/AP) One of the most successful artists of all time, prolific painter Thomas Kinkade - the self-described "Painter of Light" - died Friday at the age of 54. A spokesperson for the Kinkade family said the artist died at home in Los Gatos, Calif., apparently of natural causes. Kinkade's paintings were anything but controversial, depicting scenes of a light-filled America with a heavy emphasis on home, hearth and church. His sentimental scenes of country gardens and pastoral landscapes in dewy morning light were beloved by many but criticized by the art establishment. The painter once said that he had something...
The 'Islamic Art' Hoax

Talking about Islamic art is rather like talking about the art of the Khanates. The Imperial Kingdom of Genghis Khan was the largest contiguous empire on earth. But just because different lands and cultures were conquered by Genghis Khan doesn't mean that there is a significance to grouping their art. The sphere of power of the Muslim Empire stretched from the borders of China and the Indian subcontinent across Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Sicily, and the Iberian Peninsula, and on to the Pyrenees. There needs to be a further rationale for calling art collections from lands conquered...

Statues and Holy Picturesby Sebastian R. FamaObjections to the making and veneration of holy pictures and statues are based on faulty interpretations of Scripture. Those who are opposed to such practices traditionally appeal to Exodus 20:3-5: "You shall not have other Gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth. You shall not bow down before them or worship them."God is not prohibiting the making of pictures and statues, but the deifying and worshipping of them. Note the...

On Wednesday I went into NYC and spent the entire afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was most interested to visit the newly renovated "American Wing." I admit to being a bit frightened by the idea of a renovation because I always like the American Wing the way it was, which was a little bit unusual. Paintings covered most of the walls nearly up to the ceilings. The only other museum I can recall that was like this was the old Barnes Museum in (or near) Philadelphia. I couldn't find a picture of an old American Wing gallery...
